Always a favorite, the seven programs in this module play like video games but without violence or freneticism. The module includes mazes, a driving task, a concentration game, dart throwing, and more. Tasks can be customized for children, teens, or adults. They range from simple to quite difficult, training eye/hand coordination, visual closure, visual scanning, visual tracking, and fine motor control. You can choose to target impulse control, working memory, processing speed, and reasoning skills.

Visual Timing (Darts!)

Code Name: VMS-4

Purpose of Program

The Visual Timing program trains visual tracking and general attention. Players are required to aim a dart or similar object at stationary or moving targets, and distinguish between valid targets and foils. Players may aim for trophy targets to increase the speed of their dart. Players are required to adjust for varying target speeds and directions, and some stages include additional challenges such as compensating for the effects of "gravity." Players may aim the dart by using the moving the mouse up and down, or by pressing the keyboard up and down arrow keys. Pressing the left mouse button or tapping the space bar will throw the dart. For stages where the player has additional control while the dart is in the air, moving the mouse up or down or pressing the keyboard up and down arrow keys will steer the dart. If the TouchScreen control is enabled, the player may aim the dart by touching the left side of the screen. Touching the "Throw" button in the lower right corner will throw the dart.

This program trains the following skills:

• Visual Tracking • General Attention • Response Inhibition • Visual Perception

Maze Learning (Great Escape)

Code Name: VMS-1

Purpose of Program

The Maze Learning program trains conceptual reasoning and alternating attention between the goal and time allowed. Players are required to navigate mazes of increasing complexity and look for the exit to escape within the allotted time. In addition, the mazes are filled with “targets” that the player is to collect along the way. The more targets the player picks up, the higher his or her grade will be. Some mazes contain locked doors that block access to parts of the maze; the player must find keys to unlock the doors before proceeding. If a player is having trouble completing a maze in the alloted time, the trainer may increase the amount of time given by selecting Fixed Time from the Session Time Mode menu in the Captain's Log. The stage time may then be fixed at a specific time by selecting from the Session Time menu. Use the mouse or keyboard arrow keys to move around the maze. Holding down the left mouse button will enable a "cruise control" mode, where you do not have to keep rolling the mouse to continue moving. If TouchScreen controls are enabled, touching the screen will move toward the place that is touched.

This program trains the following skills:

• Conceptual Reasoning • Alternating Attention • Fine Motor Control • Visual Perception • General Attention • Working Memory

Visual Response Time (Pop-N-Zap)

Code Name: VMS-3

Purpose of Program

The Visual Response Time program trains visual processing speed and visual scanning. Players are required to watch a grid of targets, and click as quickly and accurately as they can on any targets that visually change.

This program trains the following skills:

• Visual Processing Speed • Visual Scanning • Visual Perception • Focused Attention • Sustained Attention • Fine Motor Speed

Visual Categorization (PickQuick)

Code Name: VMS-2

Purpose of Program

The Visual Categorization program trains visual scanning and conceptual reasoning. Players must scan all the doors they see and wait until a door opens. If an object appears from behind the door that meets the current exercise category rule, then the player should click on it. If an object appears that is not a valid target, the player should not click and simply wait.

This program trains the following skills:

• Visual Scanning • Conceptual Reasoning • Visual Perception • Response Inhibition • Central Processing Speed

Visual Tracking/Discrimination (On The Road)

Code Name: VMS-5

Purpose of Program

The Visual Tracking/Discrimination program trains visual tracking and visual perception. The player drives a truck, collecting targets while avoiding obstacles and maintaining the proper speed and following the appropriate traffic rules. Players must stop at all red stoplights they see, and avoid any other cars that may be driving on the road. Colliding with another car or hitting the guardrails or road debris will result in a response error. The player's truck will begin to smoke as an indication that only three more such response errors are allowed. Speeding or failing to stop at red lights will also result in response errors. The player may stop and pick up passengers at designated points along the road to subtract one from his response error total. The game may be controlled using the mouse or keyboard. Press the left mouse button to go faster, and the right mouse button to slow down. On the keyboard, use the left and right arrow keys to steer, and the up and down arrow keys to control the truck's speed. Pressing the spacebar or both mouse buttons at the same time will stop the car quickly. The game may also be controlled with a TouchScreen, when you have enabled the TouchScreen controls. Touch the green up or down arrows on the lower right side of the screen to move faster or slower, and touch the red stop sign to stop quickly. To steer, touch the screen and drag to the left or right.

This program trains the following skills:

• Visual Tracking • Visual Perception • Fine Motor Control • Visual Scanning • Divided Attention • General Attention • Response Inhibition

Visual Tracking/Response (Hide and Seek)

Code Name: VMS-6

Purpose of Program

The Visual Tracking/Response program trains divided visual tracking and divided attention. The player is required to stay inside a moving "forcefield" while it is red. When the field turns green, the player must move outside of the field and collect valid targets while avoiding obstacles, and then return to the field before it turns red again. Targets and obstacles are only counted toward the player's grade while the forcefield is green. While the forcefield is red, the player must stay within it, even if he sees targets floating around outside the field. Once the forcefield turns green, the player has a limited amount of time to collect targets, as they will disappear after a variable amount of time. Use the mouse or keyboard arrow keys to move around the screen. Holding down the left mouse button will enable a "cruise control" mode, where you do not have to keep rolling the mouse to continue moving. If TouchScreen controls are enabled, touching the screen will move toward the place that is touched.

This program trains the following skills:

• Visual Tracking • Divided Attention • Visual Perception • Visuospatial Classification • Fine Motor Control

Visuospatial Memory (Concentration)

Code Name: VMS-7

Purpose of Program

The Visuospatial Memory program trains visual working memory and conceptual reasoning. Players are required to search for and find matching objects in a grid by revealing them one at a time, similar to the card game "Concentration," but with many more options and challenges.

This program trains the following skills:

• Working Memory • Conceptual Reasoning • Central Processing Speed • Visual Perception
